Grad programs often don’t charge higher tuition!

There are exceptions. Professional programs (e.g., MBA, MD, JD) tend to be expensive because the faculty who teach in those programs tend to be well-paid, because they could theoretically make much more as practitioners. Also, some schools use master’s degree programs to bring in lots of cash, and see below.

On the flip side, grad programs often charge by credit, and grad credit numbers are much lower than undergrad numbers.

The major practical difference in cost is that there are few grants offered for graduate education. You typically pay list price, unless you have a grad assistantship.

Should universities charge tuition?

In a UK context, the alternative to universities charging tuition are:

  • Higher taxes
  • Government spending cuts elsewhere
  • Fewer people going to university

Whilst UK taxes should be higher (including on people like me!), I do not think the beneficiaries of said taxes should be advantaged ex-students like myself. Abolishing fees (and cancelling the student debt) would be a pretty big tax cut (9% of gross over a threshold) for me. A tax cut I don’t need. There are better places to spend the money. Likewise, I don’t think there is significant potential for cuts. Public services are already struggling. I can’t think of any areas where there’s really big money up for grabs through cuts. And finally, no, fewer people should not go to university. University provides wonderful opportunities and experiences that should be open to as many people as possible. And the skills that universities teach are the distinctively human skills that will be most valuable in an increasingly automated age. We need more graduates, not fewer.

Since the alternatives are all unpalatable, I conclude that yes, UK universities should charge tuition. Where the exact balance lies is a technical question that’s beyond me.

What US colleges or universities don't charge more for out-of-state tuition?

Private universities have the same tuition regardless of where the student is from.

Most state universities charge out of state students more UNLESS the states have an agreement. For example, Wisconsin students can attend the Univ. of Minnesota for the same tuition as Minnesota residents and Minnesota students can attend the Univ. of Wisconsin as Wisconsin students.

This is called reciprocity.

All of the private (and religiously affiliated) colleges and universities have one tuition structure for everyone. The practice of in-state vs. out-of-state tuition applies only to certain public universities. The assumption is that they receive support from the state government which balances out the loss of revenue from charging a lower in-state tuition.

Historically that was the case; state governments subsidized university attendance for their citizens in order to keep smart and highly-trained citizens in the state, rather than seeing them leave to go elsewhere.

In more recent decades, state governments have increasingly cut public support for public universities. Instead, they’ve relied on laws or political pressure to force universities to keep “in-state” tuition lower. The result is that out-of-state students subsidize / help pay for in-state students, and that overall tuitions for everyone have gone up dramatically. Additionally, this strongly incentivizes public universities to recruit and admit large numbers of full-tuition paying foreign students.

Hello,

This can be a good news for you!

I found this on the WES (World Education Services) site and that may help you:

"The Indian higher education system is based on the British model consisting of a three-tier degree structure (bachelor, master, and doctorate). Although similar to the U.S. system, Indian degree programs leading to the award of Bachelor Degrees in arts, science, commerce and social sciences are mostly three years in length. Students who complete the three-year program are awarded a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Commerce (BA, BBM, BSc, BCom).

Where Can You Get Your Three-Year Bachelor’s Degrees from India Evaluated?

World Education Services (WES) is a not for profit organization with nearly 40 years’ experience evaluating international credentials. WES recognizes selected three-year Bachelor’s degrees from India as equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor's degree, when the following conditions are met:

  • The degrees have been earned in Division I

- AND -

  • The awarding institutions have been accredited by India's National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of “A” or better.

This means that if you have earned a bachelor’s degree, with Division I from universities accredited by NAAC with a grade of “A” or better, then WES may evaluate your degree as equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree."

So its not that you don't have a chance to get into US university after your 3 year Bachelor's degree. If you get good evaluation result , then you can!

(By evaluation, I mean that, your marks here will be evaluated by them and then the result GPA will be given on a 4.0 scale. So your 3 year degree in India will be comparable with the 4 year US degree.)

Go on the WES site ( Google it) you will get ample of information.
Also see this: http://www.wes.org/educators/pdf/IndiaPolicyPacket.pdf

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Edit:

A very late update. But while I posted this answer, I myself, with 3 year Bachelor’s degree was waiting for universities’ reply for MS. The results are positive.

Good luck!

Private schools generally do not charge more for out-of-state; unfortunately the result of this is that it is equally extremely expensive for everyone.

Why do universities charge so much for international students?

Why do universities charge so much for international students?2021-07-24 22:45:41Mr_缑

In the UK the universities charge you a significant amount because international students can’t be funded through the government.

  • A UK citizen can get access to tuition fees at around 9K and have a student loan.
  • An international student can pay 14k and up for a year in the UK and this is because it isn’t backed by the government and they can’t give you loans!

I am not saying for a minute that this isn't anything to do with making money, it is a high majority of that, the UK realises it has a good education sector and that people want to come and use it and they charge a premium for that.

In turn, the put a lot of this money back into the sector through research, lecturers, and creating some amazing pieces that push the world of academia forward. They also invest in their own infrastructure to make it better. International students make up a huge market of the UK university program, see pictures below!

There is a reason why lots of universities have international officers whose job it is is to market their courses to international students.

Funding Study

There are ways you can get funding for your study in universities, some of the ways are:

  • Family / Savings
  • Businesses
  • Governments
  • Scholarships

To meet visa requirements, you must meet the funding and eligibility requirements also. If you are in the UK you are likely to need a Tier 4 visa!
